Translation has often been engaged from the perspective of coherence, rigidity and exactitude. As a discipline, its major thrust is to bring about an exact replica of words and meaning. This traditional straight jacket approach to translation has its purported merit in the area of ensuring that equivalents are found in other to do justice to meaning. This often carries with it, some psychological challenges to the translator. In the quest for the Source Text (ST) to be accurately reproduced into the Target Text (TT), there are a whole lot of emotional upheavals. To put the problem in its right perspective, what then becomes of translating works that are laced with emotions (psychological and mental expressions) from the first-person point of view? Where is the line to be drawn between the translator and the text to be translated seeing that there is a kind of symbiosis? Since emotional intelligence has become an important subject of discourse in scholarship, it behooves on translators and translation study to critically enter into a kind of relationship with the subject matter in other to extend the frontiers of translation bringing about the flexibility and emotional skills needed for translation without undermining exactitude.
